Worst song ever!
Apologize by One Republic
I think this is the worst song because the singing is not good and i cannot stand listening to it. Throughout the whole song he is contradicting himself. He is saying how he would do anything to take another chance and make things right with his girl, but then goes to say that its to late for her to say sorry and he would forgive her. This song is just stupid because no one would ever say he wants to be with someone and then right after say.. "but its too late". To me, this song is a very fictional situation. The voices are also very stringy and annoying to listen to. I would not say that the song is poorly written for it is in good context but the wrong person is singing it. Also, it is very repetitive and cliche. Although these words are strictly from my own opinion i too know people who think it is one of the worst songs put on the radio. OneRepublic got chart success with this song and it just goes past me for i would never put this song on any playlist of mine.

Social Relevance
This song has social relevance with 9/11. This song indicates the day happening. Because social relevance is something pertaining to an event in modern day history. Nine eleven is a huge known event that affected all of the united states. Jack Johnson sings about nine eleven which is indicated by him saying the traffic in the sky, which is all the people that died that day rushing to heaven. Another way this song indicates nine eleven is "theres shadows of the scrapers on the pavement". This shows that with all the residue from the scrapers falling and all the bits and peices apart and scattered all around the city. He also brings up the controversy of whether or not our countrys government knew something this major was bound to happen. Many think it was not but others, such as Jack Johnson, says in the song that there was no way we did not know with all the hints and previous small attacks. Just mere of a decade later and nine eleven is still a hugely spoken of event this song shows much social relevance.
War of My Life - John Mayer
In John Mayers song the chorus and major theme of this song is depression. Since depression is a largely diagnosed psychological disorder in America I would classify his song as having social relevance. Depression is the war that he is fighting and trying not to loose to. Many people go through this problem and could get courage from listening to his encouragement to keep fighting in this song. John sings that he will never go back to the pain he was in and has to keep going day by day in order to continue with his life, in which he says he is at the "core of his life". Also, he says how he does not like to be labeled as "depressed" and that was a major point to keep his fighting and encouraging others to do the same. Around his age is when most Americans are also getting diagnosed with depression. Many songs that the lyrics can reach out to people who relate to them are very helpful and listened to a lot. This makes "War of My Life" a successful song containing social relevance.
This song is a social relevance because they are referring and singing about Albert Einstein. The counting crows talk about his intelligence and also, his intentions. Not only is this song about Albert Einstein but also about a play that was made in the 1970's. This play may have been a social mark in that time period. Peoples opinions on the play would have affected this song as well since it is in relation to that happening. i do not know any other reasons why this song would contain social relevance other than how it talks about Albert Einsteins intelligence and pertains to certain parts of that play from the '70's.

3 of the 6 songs
Traffic in the Sky- Jack Johnson
"There's traffic in the sky"
"waves on the pavement
Shadows of the planes on the pavement
Its enough to make me cry"
"Well how could we have known?
I'll tell them it's not so hard to tell
If you keep on adding stones"
In Jack Johnson's song, "Traffic in the sky", there are many poetic devices. To start off, this song shows the theme of knowledge because he is talking about the historic event of 9/11. This is teaching people that when they ask the question of "well how could we have know?" that there were many hints and clues that something major was going to be happening. The "traffic in the sky" is symbolic to all the deaths commited that day, racing up to heaven. There is also an alliteration with, "words of wisdom", Shadows from the scrapers" and, "planes on the pavements". This song is a very good song to listen to when in the thought of 9/11 because Jack comes up with valid points to clues of what happened that day.
The 3 R's - Jack Johnson
Three it's a magic numberYes it is, it's a magic numberBecause two times three is sixAnd three times six is eighteenAnd the eighteenth letter in the alphabet is RWe've got three R's we're going to talk about todayWe've got to learn toReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleIf you're going to the market to buy some juiceYou've got to bring your own bags and you learn to reduce your wasteAnd if your brother or your sister's got some cool clothesYou could try them on before you buy some more of thoseReuse, we've got to learn to reuseAnd if the first two R's don't work outAnd if you've got to make some trashDon't throw it outRecycle, we've got to learn to recycle,We've got to learn toReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleReduce, Reuse, RecycleBecause three it's a magic numberYes it is, it's a magic number3, 3, 33, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 3633, 30, 27, 24, 21, 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, and3, it's a magic number
This song follows the theme of knowledge because it is singing about saving the world through recycling, reusing, and reducing. This is good song to learn this through because Jack Johnson is an easy listening artist and his songs are catchy. Within this song, There are alliterations with, "Reuse, Recycle, Reduce", and "cool clothes". He has imagery in this with "If your going to the market to buy some juice", "If your brother or your sister's got some cool clothes you could try them on". This shows clear pictures of people going to the market or a child trying on clothes to see if it fits them or not. The tone through this song is happy. This remains because its trying to get kids to become intrigued by the song so that they listen and learn.
Comfort
Times like these - Jack Johnson
In times like theseIn times like thoseWhat will be will beAnd so it goesAnd it always goes on and on...On and on it goesAnd there has always been laughing, crying, birth, and dyingBoys and girls with hearts that take and give and breakAnd heal and grow and recreate and raise and nurtureBut then hurt from time to time like theseAnd times like thoseAnd what will be will beAnd so it goesAnd there will always be stop and go and fast and slowAction,Reaction, sticks and stones and broken bonesThose for peace and those for warAnd god bless these ones, not those onesBut these ones made times like theseAnd times like thoseWhat will be will beAnd so it goesAnd it always goes on and on...On and on it goesBut somehow I know it won't be the sameSomehow I know it will never be the same.
In this song by Jack Johnson, he talks about how at the end of every moment life goes on. The most overused line in this song is, "What will be will be" and this is a very comforting line. This creates hope for people to define things that happen in their lives as ment to be but not affective. This song creates a comforting environment for those who are awkward or confused because of its very optimistic tone. The song is very optimistic all throughout until the very last two lines where it gets pessimistic. This is because it says "somehow i know it won't be the same, somehow i know it will never be the same". Change, altough, can be both good or bad depending on how you want to percieve it.
Upside down - Jack Johnson
Who's to sayWhat's impossibleWell they forgotThis world keeps spinningAnd with each new dayI can feel a change in everythingAnd as the surface breaks reflections fadeBut in some ways they remain the sameAnd as my mind begins to spread its wingsThere's no stopping curiosityI want to turn the whole thing upside downI'll find the things they say just can't be foundI'll share this love I find with everyoneWe'll sing and dance to Mother Nature's songsI don't want this feeling to go awayWho's to sayI can't do everythingWell I can tryAnd as I roll along I begin to findThings aren't always just what they seemI want to turn the whole thing upside downI'll find the things they say just can't be foundI'll share this love I find with everyoneWe'll sing and dance to Mother Nature's songsThis world keeps spinning and there's no time to wasteWell it all keeps spinning spinning round and round andUpside downWho's to say what's impossible and can't be foundI don't want this feeling to go awayPlease don't go awayPlease don't go awayPlease don't go awayIs this how it's supposed to beIs this how it's supposed to be
Jack Johnson's song, "upside down" is a very comforting song. It reassures tha the world will always provide a tomorrow for everyone and that nothing will be forever it one doesn't want it to be. He states that no one can tell you what you can and cannot do, as long as your heart is set on it.. it can be done. One is to set out and find out about everything/anything they want. After i listen to this song, I am determined to make a good life for myself.
Friendship
The Sharing song - Jack Johnson
It's always more funTo share with everyoneIt's always more funTo share with everyoneIf you have twoGive one to your friendIf you have threeGive one to your friend and meIt's always more funTo share with everyoneIt's always more funTo share with everyoneIf you've got oneHere is something you can learnYou can still shareJust by taking turnsIf you've got a ballBounce it to the gangIf there is a new kidInvite him out to hangIf you've got one sandwichCut that thing in halfIf you know a secret jokeTell it and share a laughIf you've got one drumsticksGive one to your friendMake one beautiful rhythmShare a beat that never endsAnd if you're feeling lonelyShare time with your momShare some milk and cookiesAnd sing the sharing songIt's always more funTo share with everyoneIt's always more funTo share with everyone
This song is about friendship because it teaches a lesson within friendship. Sharing is a way that maintains a good friendship. In this song there are not many poetic devices, the really only literary device for poems is just a good rhyming scheme. Although it teaches lessons, and is made for kids watching the curious george video it still portrays the theme of frienship and it alternative rock, which puts it in this category.
We're gonna be friends - Jack Johnson
Fall is here, hear the yellBack to school, ring the bellBrand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pensI can tell that we are gonna be friendsYes I can tell that we are gonna be friendsWalk with me Suzy LeeThrough the park and by the tree
We can rest upon the groundAnd look at all the bugs we've foundSafely walk to school without a soundWe safely walk to school without a soundHere we are no one elseWe walk to school all by ourselvesThere's dirt on our uniformsFrom chasing all the ants and wormsWe clean up and now
it's time to learnWe clean up and now it's time to learnNumbers letters learn to spellNouns and books and show and tellPlay time we will throw the ballThen Back to class through the hall Teacher marks our height against the wallThe teacher marks our height against the wallAnd we don't notice any time passCause We don't notice anythingWe sit side by side in every classThe teacher thinks that I sound funnyBut she likes it when you singTonight I'll dream in my bedwhile silly thoughts run through my headof the bugs and alphabetAnd when I wake tomorrow I'll betYou and I will walk together againCause I can tell that we are gonna be friendYes I can tell that we are gonna be friends
This song is all about friendship. It starts off with the first meeting day, and then goes to later down the line where they are still friends. It mostly all happens within the classroom, this is because in reality most friendships do develop within the classroom. Alliterations to repetitions create this song. The repeition in this song however, is not a bad thing. It makes the song flow more smoothly. Beyond many lines of imagery also are in this song. I get a good scene in my mind of a boy and girl playing and sitting in class, which is what a good song should contain. I would not say that there are any cliche phrases in this song, which is a good thing.

Pun
"I think you know where I'm coming from I need a pick up
and I don't mean truck "
The pun in this song is "i think you know where i'm coming from, i need a pick up and i dont mean truck". This could mean pick up as in a truck and also as the girl taking him out and having a good time. This is a pun because of the two meanings it conveys. Some people would see it as a truck until he says he claifys himeself.
Gravity by John Mayer
"oh twice as much aint twice as goodAnd can't sustain like one half "
This john mayer song has a pun in it, or so I think. I think the pun is "Oh twice as much ain't twice as good and can't sustain like one half could". This is a pun because one meaning of it is the half of gravity. The second meaning to this, is meaning another significant other because he is refering to love so "one half" could mean the lover in this song.

Euphemism
"mistake making fool with excuses like'baby that was a long time ago'
but that's just a euphemismif you want the truth he was out of control"
This song contains euphemism. Although he blantly states that there is euphemism, it is still an example. The part is "baby that was a long time ago". This is euphemism because it is a nicer way to say that things have changed and he doesnt feelt he same way anymore. After that line, Jack says it is an euphemism and the truth was that the guys was "out of control".
Taylor by Jack Johnson
"Well mommy's little dancer is quite a little secret"
"Used to be a limber chick n' times have been a tickin, now she's finger lickin to the man,With the money in his pocket,"
This song contains euphemism to cover up from calling a girl a prostitute, or stripper. He calls her, "Mommy's little dancer" which is a very nice and an elegant( as elegant as you can get) way to say shes a stripper. Another example of euphemism is "now she's finger licking to the man with the money in his pocket". This is a nicer way to say that she is a gold digger, and using any man for the money.

Ambiguity, Allusion, and Allegory
No Other Way by Jack Johnson
When your mind is a messso is mineI cant sleepcause it hurts when I thinkMy thoughts aren't at peacewith the plans that we makechances we takethey're, not yours and not minethere's waves that can breakall the words that we sayand the words that we meanwords can fall shortcan't see the unseencause the world is awakefor somebody's sake now, please close your eyes womanplease get some sleepAnd know that if I knewall of the answers I wouldnot hold them from you'dknow all the things that i'd knowwe told each other, there is no other wayWell too much silence can be misleadingYou're drifting I can hear it in the way that your breathingWe don't really need to find reasonCause out the same door that it came well its leaving its leavingLeaving like a day that’s done and part of a seasonResolve is just a concept that's as dead as the leavesBut at least we can sleep, its all that we needWhen we wake we will findOur minds will be free to go to sleepAnd know that if I knewall of the answers I wouldnot hold them from you'dknow all the things that i'd knowwe told each other, there is no other way
A part in these lyrics are amiguous. This part is, "cause out the same door that it came well its leaving, its leaving". This is ambiguity because some people would see this as the love in their relationship leaving. Others would see this as the consciousness of her is leaving, because he is talking about her drifting off to sleep. The line is not clear as far as a meaning, and that is what makes it ambiguity.
Allusion:
Comfortable by John Mayer
I just remembered, that time at the marketsnuck up behind me and jumped on my shopping cartAnd rode down, aisle 5you looked behind you to smile back at mecrashed into a rack full of magazinesthey asked us if we could leave. Can't remember, what went wrong last SeptemberThough I'm sure that you'd remind me, if you had toOur love was, comfortable andso broken inI sleep with this new girl i'm still getting used tomy friends all approve, say she's gonna be good for youthey throw me, high fivesShe says the bible is all that she readsand prefers that I not use profanityyour mouth was, so dirtyLife of the partyand she swears that she's artsybut you could distinguishMiles from ColtraneOur love was, comfortable andso broken inshe's perfect, so flawlessor so they say, sayShe thinks I can't see the smile that she's fakin'and poses for pictures that aren't being takenI loved yougrey sweat pants, no makeup, so perfectOur love was, comfortable andso broken inshe's perfect, so flawlessI'm not impressed, I want you back.
This song is an allusion because it makes a reference to the bible. He talks about how the girl he sings about reads the bible and scolds him for his "dirty mouth". The bible is a literary work therefore this makes the song an allusion even though the reference is very short.
Allegory:
Wheel by John Mayer
People have the right to flyAnd will when it gets compromisedTheir hearts say "Move along"Their minds say "Gotcha heart"Let's move it alongLet's move it alongAnd airportsSee it all the timeWhere someone's last goodbyeBlends in with someone's sighCause someone's coming homeIn hand a single roseAnd that's the way this wheel keeps working nowThat's the way this wheel keeps working nowAnd I won't be the lastNo I won't be the last,To love herAnd you can't build a house of leavesAnd live like it's an evergreenIt's just a season thingIt's just this thing that seasons doAnd that's the way this wheel keeps working nowThat's the way this wheel keeps working nowAnd you won't be the firstNo you won't be the firstTo love meYou can find me, if you ever want againI'll be around the bendI'll be around the bendI'll be around,I'll be aroundAnd if you never stop when you wave goodbyeYou just might find if you give it timeYou will wave hello againYou just might wave hello againAnd that's the way this wheel keeps working nowThat's the way this wheel keeps working nowYou can't love too much, one part of it (repeat then fade)I believe that my life's gonna seeThe love I giveReturn to meI believe that my life's gonna seeThe love I giveReturn to meI believe that my life's gonna seeThe love I giveReturn to me [repeat 1x]This song is an example of allegory. This is because he talks about "the way this wheel keeps working". The wheel is refering to love, and it is saying how a wheel keeps turning, love keeps coming back around and around.

6 songs
R.E.M - Losing my religion
This song is about a man losing his religion by trying to keep up with this person he is singing about. He is losing his religion because she chooses what he confesses and says that if his fantasies got out it would be too late for forgiveness. Losing one's religion is not a very good or easy thing to admit too.
Friendship:
We're going to be friends - Jack Johnson
This song is about a boy and girl meeting at school when they were young. They both ride their bikes to school and sit next to each other in all their classes. They play in dirt with worms and do everything that little kid friends do. The boy sensed they would be great friends and they did end up being lifetime friends.
Comfort
Times like these - Jack Johnson
This song is classified under a song for joy. This is because the lyrics are saying that things may happen but in the end it all goes on and it'll be okay. He also goes to say that although stuff in life will change, and they may not be the same.. everytihng will be okay. This is comfort for those who are going through a rough time and have no hope that it will be okay, because jack keeps telling one that it will be okay in the end.
Joy
St. Patricks Day - John Mayer
This song conveys joy because it is a happy tone with a happy situation. A couple is together and they say they will remain true and comfortable with each other as long as their love remains true. He says that if all he had was her love, then he would be happy. He goes through all the months and seasons of the year and talks about how happy they'd still be with each other.
Knowledge
Traffic in the sky - Jack Johnson
This song is under knowledge because it is teaching us about how people were aware about 9/11 and it could have been stopped or the war now could be stopped. He talks about how there were many foreshadowing events that occured, the "stones" as he calls them. He says a line that people always say as, " How could we have known" and then goes to say how we could have known because they had "plans on paper" like how we knew they were plotting something against the united states.
Love
American Love - Jacks Mannequin
This song is about a couple who went through alot to be with their real love, a girl was suppose to start college but she went away with her love and everyone was looking for her. They ended up going through hard times but their love remained the same at the end.
